Three of the following are inversion types. Which is not?
Adiabatic inversion
Radiation inversion
Subsidence inversion
Frontal inversion
Answer: C
Correct answer: Adiabatic inversion
There is no such thing as an adiabatic inversion. Adiabatic describes a process without heat exchange, and the dry adiabatic lapse rate - a fall of about \( 9.8 \) degrees per kilometre - is the opposite of an inversion, in which temperature rises with height.
The other three are the standard types. A radiation inversion forms when the ground cools by radiation on a clear calm night; a subsidence inversion forms aloft where descending air in a high pressure system is compressed and warms; and a frontal inversion forms where warm air overruns colder air at a front.
