Members of all the following genera of bacteria are typically found in a maturing Winogradsky column except :
Answer: D
The genus not typically found is Escherichia.
A Winogradsky column of mud, cellulose, sulphate and water develops gradients of oxygen and sulphide, and each zone fills with characteristic soil and mud bacteria. Clostridium ferments cellulose in the anaerobic bottom layers, Desulfovibrio reduces sulphate to sulphide there, and purple non-sulphur bacteria such as Rhodospirillum grow in the middle zone.
Escherichia is an enteric bacterium of animal intestines and is not one of the organisms the column selects for.
