Bacterial conjugation
Answer: B
Bacterial conjugation requires direct contact between two bacterial cells through pilus.
In conjugation a donor cell carrying a conjugative plasmid such as the F factor makes a sex pilus that attaches to a recipient cell and draws the two together. A single strand of the plasmid DNA is then transferred into the recipient, which becomes a donor itself.
The other options describe other processes. Uptake of free DNA from the environment is transformation. Transfer of bacterial genes carried by a virus is transduction. Conjugation is a form of gene transfer, not reproduction: no new cell is produced, and bacteria reproduce asexually by binary fission.
