The notes text box in Normal view is small, so the text is displayed at a reduced percentage and is hard to read while typing. Raising the Zoom level enlarges the pane on screen without changing the printed size. Slide Show runs the presentation, Insert adds objects, and the Slide Master governs formatting - none of them make the notes pane easier to read.
