Hypertrophy caused due to the action of root-knot nematode is:
Answer: B
Hypertrophy caused by the root-knot nematode is an increase in cell size. The nematode's saliva makes root cells next to its head enlarge into giant cells, and this and extra cell division (hyperplasia) form the root galls.
It is not a decrease in size or number of cells.
The root-knot nematode feeds from giant cells, whose nuclei divide without cell division, and the cells become much larger. The surrounding cells multiply and give the swelling called a knot.
