What does the bandwidth expansion factor measure?
Answer: C
It is the ratio of transmitted to message bandwidth, so it is two for AM and DSB, one for SSB, and about twelve for FM broadcasting. The output-over-channel ratio is the figure of merit, its natural partner in any comparison. The noise-to-3 dB bandwidth ratio is a filter detail. And deviation over message frequency is the modulation index. Plotting figure of merit against expansion factor is how the schemes are properly compared. Most errors on this topic come from carrying a result across from a neighbouring scheme where it does not hold.
