Who, among the following is credited with the making of the first authoritative Dictionary of the English Language ?
Answer: B
Samuel Johnson compiled A Dictionary of the English Language, published in 1755, the first authoritative dictionary of English, which he produced over about nine years with a few assistants. Bishop Berkeley was a philosopher, Edmund Burke a statesman and political thinker, and Horace Walpole a letter-writer and author of The Castle of Otranto. The answer is Samuel Johnson. The work was later extended and revised by Johnson, and its famous definitions, such as the one of 'lexicographer' as a harmless drudge, show his wit.
