Discussion
Consider the following statements about parametric sensitivity.
1. A small change in coolant temperature can produce a large change in the hot spot.
2. The reactor may pass from a safe to a runaway condition abruptly.
3. The transition is always gradual and easy to detect.
Answer: D
The first two are correct and are what makes such reactors demand careful design. The third is exactly the danger, since the change can be abrupt and leaves little warning time. Design margins are set with this in mind.
