Assertion (A): An autothermal reactor system needs an auxiliary heater for start-up.
Reason (R): There is no reaction heat available until the reactor is already running.
Answer: C
Correct answer: Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of A
Both are true and the reason is the difficulty. An autothermal system uses the product stream to preheat the feed, so once running it needs no external heat - but that arrangement provides nothing at all when the reactor is cold, since there is no reaction heat to recover. A start-up heater brings the feed to ignition temperature and is then withdrawn, and the same problem recurs after any shutdown.
