Discussion
Consider the following statements about an oblique shock wave:
1. The velocity component tangential to the shock is unchanged.
2. The component normal to the shock behaves as it would through a normal shock.
3. The flow is deflected away from the shock surface.
Which of the statements given above is or are correct?
Answer: C
The first two are correct and together reduce the oblique shock to a normal shock problem. The third is the wrong way round: the normal component falls while the tangential survives, so the resultant lies closer to the shock and the flow is turned into it, as it must be at a compression corner.
