Discussion
Consider the following statements about a detached bow shock:
1. It forms when the required deflection exceeds the maximum for the free-stream Mach number.
2. It is effectively a normal shock at the stagnation streamline.
3. It becomes stronger with increasing distance from the body.
Which of the statements given above is or are correct?
Answer: A
The first two are correct and describe why a blunt body must carry a detached shock and what the flow is like just ahead of the nose. The third is the wrong way round: the bow shock weakens with distance from the body, decaying eventually into a Mach wave far out to the sides.
