Consider the following statements about the limits of normal shock behaviour in air:
1. The density ratio approaches six as the upstream Mach number grows without bound.
2. The downstream Mach number approaches about 0.378 in the same limit.
3. The static pressure ratio approaches a finite limit of about 45.
Which of the statements given above is or are correct?
Answer: B
The first two are the correct limiting values for a specific heat ratio of 1.4. The third is false: the pressure ratio grows without bound as the shock strengthens, and so does the temperature ratio. Only the density ratio and the downstream Mach number saturate.
