Discussion
Consider the following statements about the effect of raising the free-stream Mach number over a fixed wedge:
1. The attached shock angle decreases.
2. The shock lies closer to the wedge surface.
3. The maximum deflection available increases.
Which of the statements given above is or are correct?
Answer: A
All three are correct. A higher Mach number narrows the Mach cone and, on the weak branch, reduces the shock angle for the same turning, wrapping the shock in towards the surface. It also raises the maximum deflection, which is why a wedge that detaches its shock at one speed may hold it attached at a higher one.
