Discussion
Arrange these steps of computing net thrust in order:
1. Find the mass flow through the engine
2. Compute the gross thrust from exit velocity and pressure
3. Compute the ram drag from flight speed and mass flow
4. Subtract ram drag from gross thrust
5. Apply installation losses to obtain installed thrust
Select the correct sequence.
Answer: C
Each step removes something the previous figure had included optimistically. The final step is often overlooked, yet spillage, nacelle drag and airframe offtakes can account for several per cent of what the test bed measured.
