Discussion
Arrange these nozzle conditions in order of increasing pressure ratio:
1. Unchoked, with subsonic exit flow
2. Just choked, with sonic conditions at the throat
3. Choked and under-expanded, expanding outside the nozzle
4. Highly under-expanded, with a strongly expanding free jet
Select the correct sequence.
Answer: D
Once the throat is sonic the mass flow is fixed and further pressure ratio appears as exit pressure above ambient. Adding a divergent section converts part of that residual pressure into velocity and recovers the thrust it represents.
