Arrange these particles in the order they activate in a rising parcel, first to last.
1. a small soluble particle
2. a large sea salt particle
3. an insoluble dust particle
4. a moderate soluble sulphate particle
Answer: D
Activation follows the critical supersaturation, which falls as size and solubility rise. The insoluble particle has no solute effect at all and requires the full curvature correction to be overcome. In practice such particles activate only in the strongest updraughts.
