In a row of trees, one tree is fifth from either end of the row. How many trees are there in the row?
Answer: B
Correct answer: 9
The tree is counted from both ends, so the four trees before it and the four after it, together with the tree itself, make up the row: \[ 5 + 5 - 1 = \mathbf{9} \] The 1 is subtracted because the tree itself is counted twice.
