The numbers below were generated by a rule that holds throughout. Determine the relationship and select the number that follows.
6, 8, 13, 21, 32, 46, ?
Answer: A
Correct answer: 63
The gaps are not equal: they run 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, each 3 more than the last. The next gap must therefore be 17, and adding it to the final term, 46 plus 17 is 63. As a check, the gap between the answer and 46 is 17, which continues the run of gaps 2, 5, 8, 11, 14 by a further 3. The commonest cause of a wrong answer here is extending the differences rather than the rule that generates them.
