Discussion
One entry is missing from the sequence set out below. Determine the relationship and select the number that follows.
9, 14, 24, 39, 59, ?
Answer: B
Correct answer: 84
The gaps are not equal: they run 5, 10, 15, 20, each 5 more than the last. The next gap must therefore be 25, and adding it to the final term, 59 plus 25 is 84. As a check, the gap between the answer and 59 is 25, which continues the run of gaps 5, 10, 15, 20 by a further 5. A candidate answer that requires the rule to change at the last step is almost certainly wrong.
