One entry is missing from the sequence set out below. Settle on the rule the terms obey and give the next number.
11, 16, 24, 35, 49, ?
Answer: B
Correct answer: 66
The gaps are not equal: they run 5, 8, 11, 14, each 3 more than the last. The next gap must therefore be 17, and adding it to the final term, 49 plus 17 is 66. As a check, the gap between the answer and 49 is 17, which continues the run of gaps 5, 8, 11, 14 by a further 3. The arithmetic in these questions is deliberately light, so an answer that requires heavy calculation is a sign the rule has been misread.
