Select the number from among the given options that can replace the question mark (?) in the following series. 128, 120, 256, 240, 1024, ?
Answer: B
The missing number is 960. Take the terms in odd places and in even places separately. The odd places hold 128, 256, 1024. The even places hold 120, 240 and the missing term. Each even-place term is \(\frac{15}{16}\) of the term just before it: 120 is \(\frac{15}{16}\) of 128, and 240 is \(\frac{15}{16}\) of 256.
\[ \frac{15}{16} \times 1024 = 960 \]480 and 512 are not 15/16 of 1024 and 1000 does not fit that ratio either, so only 960 continues the pattern.
