The next number in this series will be
71, 73, 79, 83, 89, _?_
Answer: B
The next number is 97.
71, 73, 79, 83 and 89 are consecutive prime numbers. The next prime after 89 is 97: 90, 92, 94, 96 and 98 are even, 91 = 7 × 13, 93 = 3 × 31 and 95 = 5 × 19.
The other options are not prime: 96 is even, 98 is even, and 99 = 9 × 11. So only 97 continues the series.
A quick test for primes below 100: a number is prime if it is not divisible by 2, 3, 5 or 7, the primes up to the square root of 100. 97 passes all four tests.
