When \(\frac{1}{4}\) is written as a rational number with denominator 12, then the numerator would be
Answer: C
The numerator is 3.
To change the denominator from 4 to 12, multiply top and bottom by 3:
\[ \begin{aligned} \frac{1}{4} &= \frac{1 \times 3}{4 \times 3} \\ &= \frac{3}{12} \end{aligned} \]
8 is what you get by subtracting 4 from 12 instead of dividing, and the negative options would change the sign of a positive fraction, which multiplying top and bottom by the same number never does.
