What is the Octal equivalent of the binary number 11111001 ?
Answer: C
The octal equivalent of 11111001 is 371. Group the bits in threes from the right, padding the left: 011 111 001.
\[ 011 = 3,\quad 111 = 7,\quad 001 = 1 \]
So the number is 371 in octal. As a check, 11111001 in binary is 249 in decimal, and \(3 \times 64 + 7 \times 8 + 1 = 249\). Options (A) 761 and (B) 762 come from grouping the bits wrongly, and (D) 372 gives 250, one more than the binary number.
