Which of the following is NOT connected in any way with submarine, hot spring vents ?
Answer: D
The one not connected with hot spring vents is thick turbidite deposits of the continental rise.
Turbidites are laid down by turbidity currents that carry sediment down the continental slope and spread it over the continental rise and abyssal plain. They are a product of sediment transport at continental margins and have nothing to do with hydrothermal activity.
The other three are all linked to submarine hot springs at spreading ridges: black smokers are vents discharging hot, mineral-laden fluid; the metals precipitate as sulphide-rich sediments and mounds; and the vents support communities of tube worms, clams and bacteria that live on chemosynthesis instead of photosynthesis.
