In the Southern Hemisphere, an outstanding tongue of low salinity, originating from the sea surface at 50° S, extends to a depth of 1 km, is a indicator of :
Answer: B
The tongue is Antarctic Intermediate Water.
Antarctic Intermediate Water forms near the Antarctic Polar Front at about 50-60°S, where cold, relatively fresh surface water sinks. It spreads northwards at depths around 500-1,500 m as a distinct salinity minimum that can be traced across the equator in the Atlantic.
Mediterranean Water is a warm, salty tongue in the North Atlantic, not a low-salinity water of the southern ocean. 'North Hemispheric Water' is not a named water mass, and Arctic Intermediate Water belongs to the Arctic, not the Southern Hemisphere.
