If the first and the last digit of each of the given numbers are interchanged and two is added to the middle digit, then what is the sum of the digits of the second highest number formed ? 573 926 465 757 846
Answer: D
The sum of the digits is 20.
Interchange the first and last digits of each number, then add 2 to the middle digit:
| Number | Interchanged | Middle + 2 |
|---|---|---|
| 573 | 375 | 395 |
| 926 | 629 | 649 |
| 465 | 564 | 584 |
| 757 | 757 | 777 |
| 846 | 648 | 668 |
In descending order the new numbers are 777, 668, 649, 584 and 395, so the second highest is 668, and 6 + 6 + 8 = 20. Taking the highest (777) would give 21, and 649 would give 19.
