Discussion
Consider the following statements about brighteners and dyed goods.
1. A brightener is of no use on a deep shade.
2. It is used on pastel shades to give a cleaner appearance.
3. It improves the fastness of the dye it accompanies.
Answer: B
Correct answer: 1 and 2 only
Statements 1 and 2 are correct: a deep shade absorbs the emitted blue along with everything else, so the brightener is wasted, while on a pastel it lifts the shade and makes it look cleaner and more brilliant. Statement 3 confuses two properties - a brightener adds no fastness to the dye and, having modest light fastness itself, is usually the first component of the finish to fail.
