Bhim invested 28% of his monthly salary of ₹ 40,000 in mutual funds. He spent the remaining salary in the respective ratio of 1 : 4 : 3 on house rent, groceries and medical expenses, respectively. What was the difference between the amount invested in mutual funds and that spent on groceries ?
Answer: A
The difference is 3200 rupees.
\[ \begin{aligned} \text{mutual funds} &= 28\% \times 40000 = 11200 \\ \text{remaining} &= 40000 - 11200 = 28800 \\ \text{groceries} &= \tfrac{4}{8} \times 28800 = 14400 \\ 14400 - 11200 &= 3200 \end{aligned} \]
The ratio 1 : 4 : 3 has 8 parts, so groceries get half the remainder. Splitting the whole salary instead of the remainder gives a different, wrong figure.
