Railway wheels are coned in a slope of ______.
Answer: B
Railway wheels are coned at a slope of 1 in 20. The tyres of the wheels are made conical, and the rails are tilted inwards at the same slope, so that on a curve the outer wheel runs on a larger diameter and the inner on a smaller one. This lets the wheels cover different distances without slipping and keeps the train centred on the track. Flatter or steeper slopes such as 1 in 10, 1 in 30 or 1 in 40 are not the standard coning.
