Which one of the following is a distance based method of tree construction ?
Answer: A
The distance-based method is UPGMA.
UPGMA (unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean) first converts sequences into a matrix of pairwise distances, then repeatedly joins the two closest taxa or clusters and recomputes average distances until one tree remains. Neighbour-joining is the other well-known distance method.
Maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods are character-based: they evaluate trees from the individual sites of the alignment, not from a summary distance matrix.
