When a wave passes from one medium to another, which of the following change ?
1. Velocity
2. Amplitude
3. Frequency
4. Wavelength
Choose the correct option :
Answer: D
Velocity, amplitude and wavelength change, so the answer is 1, 2 and 4 only.
The frequency of a wave is set by its source and does not change when it crosses into a new medium. The speed does change, because it depends on the medium. Since \(v = f\lambda\), the wavelength changes in the same proportion as the speed.
The amplitude also changes, because part of the wave's energy is reflected at the boundary and the transmitted wave carries less. Options including frequency (3) are therefore wrong.
