Discussion
A tap can completely fill a water tank in 8 hrs. The water tank has a hole in it through which the water leaks out. The leakage will cause the full water tank to get empty in 12 hrs. How much time will it take for the tap to fill the tank completely ..?
Answer: C
The tap fills \( \tfrac{1}{8} \) of the tank per hour and the hole empties \( \tfrac{1}{12} \), so the net rate is the difference:
\[ \frac{1}{8} - \frac{1}{12} = \frac{3 - 2}{24} = \frac{1}{24} \]
\[ \therefore\; \text{time} = 24 \text{ hours} \]
Adding the two times, or averaging them, has no meaning here: rates add, times do not.
