Discussion
A clay has a liquid limit of 45 per cent and a plastic limit of 20 per cent. What is its plasticity index?
Answer: A
Subtracting the plastic limit from the liquid limit gives 25. A larger index means a wider range of water content over which the body can be worked, which is generally an advantage in forming. Too wide a range brings its own drying problems, however.
