Discussion
Consider the following pairs of problem and the measure that addresses it:
Stack tip downwash - Raising exit velocity
Building downwash - Applying the good engineering practice height rule
Acid condensation in the stack - Reheating the flue gas
High emission rate - Building a taller stack
How many of the pairs given above are correctly matched?
Answer: B
Correct answer: Only three
The first three are properly matched: raising exit velocity cures stack tip downwash, the GEP height rule addresses building downwash, and reheat prevents acid condensation. The fourth is not a remedy at all - a taller stack does nothing about a high emission rate; it disperses the same mass more widely. Reducing the emission means controlling it at source.
