P-side of a semiconductor diode is applied a potential of 0.5 V whereas the N-side is applied a potential of −1.0 V. The diode shall :
Answer: C
The diode will conduct.
A diode is forward biased when its P-side is more positive than its N-side. Here the P-side is at +0.5 V and the N-side at −1.0 V, so the forward voltage across the junction is 0.5 − (−1.0) = 1.5 V.
That is well above the cut-in voltage of a silicon diode (about 0.7 V) or a germanium diode (about 0.3 V), so the diode conducts fully. 'Not conduct' and 'breakdown' would need reverse bias, and breakdown also needs a large reverse voltage. 'Conduct partially' fits a forward voltage below the cut-in level, not 1.5 V.
