Discussion
Consider the following statements about convection permitting models.
1. They resolve individual convective cells at kilometre scale.
2. They improve the timing and structure of showers.
3. They remove the need for any microphysics parameterisation.
Answer: C
The first two are correct and are why such models are now widely used. The third is wrong, since microphysics operates at scales far below any feasible grid spacing. Microphysics will remain parameterised for the foreseeable future.
