Which of the following scale is the smallest one ?
Answer: A
The smallest scale is 1cm = 10 km.
A scale is 'small' when its representative fraction is small. Convert each to an RF:
- 1 cm = 10 km = 1,000,000 cm, so RF = 1/1,000,000
- 1 cm = 10 m = 1,000 cm, so RF = 1/1,000
- RF = 1/5,000
- 1 : 10,000, so RF = 1/10,000
1/1,000,000 is the smallest fraction, so 1 cm = 10 km is the smallest scale. The trap is to pick 1 : 10,000 because it has the largest number written down; the other two are larger scales still.
