The present ages of A and B are in the ratio 5 : 4. Two years ago the ratio of their ages was 4 : 3. What is the present age of A ?
Answer: C
A's present age is 10 years.
Let the present ages be 5x and 4x. Two years ago they were 5x - 2 and 4x - 2, in the ratio 4 : 3:
\[ \begin{aligned} 3(5x - 2) &= 4(4x - 2) \\ 15x - 6 &= 16x - 8 \\ x &= 2 \end{aligned} \]
So A is 5 × 2 = 10 years old and B is 8. Two years ago they were 8 and 6, which is 4 : 3. The option of 8 years is B's age, not A's, and 12 years does not satisfy the second ratio.
