A is two years older than B who is twice as old as C. If the total of ages of A, B, C is 27, then how old is the B?
Answer: A
B is 10 years old.
Let C be \(x\). Then B is \(2x\) and A is \(2x + 2\):
\[ \begin{aligned} (2x + 2) + 2x + x &= 27 \\ 5x &= 25, \quad x = 5 \end{aligned} \]
So C is 5, B is 10 and A is 12. 12 is A's age, the usual slip of answering for the wrong person, and 8 and 14 do not satisfy the total.
