Decreasing by 30% leaves 70% of the number, so \(0.7x = 84\) and \(x = 120\). Check: 30% of 120 is 36, and \(120 - 36 = 84\). Adding 30% back to 84 gives 109.2, not 120, which is why the reverse percentage cannot simply be added on.
