Consider the following statements about colour difference measurement.
1. Several colour difference formulae are in use.
2. A pass or fail decision needs a stated tolerance as well as a formula.
3. Any two formulae give the same numerical value for a given pair.
Answer: D
Correct answer: 1 and 2 only
Statements 1 and 2 are correct: several formulae are in current use, and a number means nothing without a tolerance against which to judge it. Statement 3 is wrong - the formulae weight lightness, chroma and hue differently, so the same pair of samples yields different values, which is exactly why the next item insists that the formula be named.
