Teacher education is professional education.
Like medicine or law, teaching rests on a body of theory (philosophy, psychology and sociology of education) applied through supervised practice, and is governed by a professional body, the NCTE. Teacher education prepares people for the teaching profession, which is why it is classed as professional education.
Vocational and skill education train for specific trades and practical skills, and technical education covers engineering and technology. These descriptions miss the theoretical and ethical base of teaching.
