Two successive discounts of 10% and 15% is equal to a single discount of:
Answer: D
The single discount is 23.5 per cent. After successive discounts of 10 and 15 per cent the price becomes 0.90 x 0.85 = 0.765 of the original, so the total discount is 1 - 0.765 = 0.235, which is 23.5 per cent. Equivalently, the single discount is \[10 + 15 - \frac{10 \times 15}{100} = 23.5\] per cent. The option 25 per cent just adds the two discounts and ignores the second being taken on the reduced price.
