The cost price of an article is ₹ 600. A shopkeeper sells it for ₹ 637.50, after giving a discount of 15 % on its list price. If he sells it after giving 5 % discount on its list price, then what is the profit percent?
Answer: C
The profit percent is 18.75 %. The article sells for 637.50 after a 15 % discount, so the list price L satisfies 0.85 L = 637.50, which gives L = 750.
\[ \text{SP at 5\% discount} = 0.95 \times 750 \]
\[ = 712.50 \]
\[ \frac{712.50 - 600}{600} \times 100 = 18.75\% \]
The options 15.5 %, 16.25 % and 19.5 % do not match 112.50 divided by 600, so the third option is correct. As a check, 85 % of the list price of 750 is 637.50, which agrees with the selling price given in the question. At a 5 % discount the price is 712.50, which is 112.50 above the cost.
