The marked price on an item was ₹25,000, but the shopkeeper offered a double discount of 40% and 20%. For how much did the shopkeeper finally sell the item?
Answer: B
The final selling price is ₹12,000.
A double discount of 40% and 20% means the price is multiplied by 0.6 and then by 0.8.
\[ 25000\times0.6\times0.8=12000 \]
₹10,000 would come from a single discount of 60%, and ₹14,000 and ₹16,000 from smaller discounts.
The two discounts are not added: 40% + 20% = 60% would give 10,000. They are applied one after the other, so the price after the first is 15,000 and 20% off this is 3,000, leaving 12,000.
