By selling an article at \(\frac{23}{40}\) of its selling price, a shopkeeper loses 8%. If it is sold at 90% of its original selling price, then the profit percentage is:
Answer: D
The profit is 44%. Let the cost price be 100. Selling at \(\frac{23}{40}\) of the selling price gives a loss of 8%, so \[ \frac{23}{40}\,SP = 92 \] \[ SP = 92\times\frac{40}{23} = 160 \] At 90% of the original selling price: \[ 0.9\times 160 = 144 \] The profit is \(144 - 100 = 44\) on a cost of 100, which is 44%. The options 35%, 38% and 40% come from slipping on the fraction or on the 90%.
