Match List I with List II.
| List I | List II |
|---|---|
| a. The single equivalent discount for successive discount of 10% and 5% on marked price of an article is- | I. 18.4% |
| b. The single equivalent discount for successive discount of 15% and 4% on marked price of an article is- | II. 28% |
| c. The single equivalent discount for successive discount of 20% and 10% on marked price of an article is- | III. 14.5% |
| d. The single equivalent discount for successive discount of 12% and 8% on marked price of an article is- | IV. 19.04% |
Choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:
Answer: D
The correct matching is a-III, b-I, c-II, d-IV.
Two successive discounts of \(x\%\) and \(y\%\) equal a single discount of \(x + y - \frac{xy}{100}\) percent:
\[ \begin{aligned} \text{a: } 10 + 5 - 0.5 &= 14.5\% \\ \text{b: } 15 + 4 - 0.6 &= 18.4\% \\ \text{c: } 20 + 10 - 2 &= 28\% \\ \text{d: } 12 + 8 - 0.96 &= 19.04\% \end{aligned} \]
Simply adding the two discounts (15%, 19%, 30%, 20%) overstates each one, because the second discount applies to an already reduced price.
