Discussion
Consider the following statements about raising bypass ratio:
1. Specific fuel consumption improves.
2. Nacelle diameter increases.
3. Jet mixing noise increases.
Which of the statements given above is or are correct?
Answer: A
Correct answer: 1 and 2 only
Statement 1 is correct: a higher bypass ratio improves propulsive efficiency and so lowers specific fuel consumption. Statement 2 is correct: it requires a larger fan and therefore a larger nacelle.
Statement 3 is false and inverts the effect. Raising bypass ratio reduces jet mixing noise, because the same thrust is obtained by accelerating a larger mass of air through a smaller velocity change - and mixing noise scales with a high power of jet velocity.
