A propeller of 2.5 m radius turns at \( 1500 \ \mathrm{rpm} \). The tip speed due to rotation alone is approximately
Answer: B
The rotational speed is \( 1500 \times 2\pi/60 = 157 \) radians per second, and multiplying by the radius gives 393 metres per second. Adding the forward speed vectorially takes the tip past the speed of sound, which is what limits propeller aircraft.
